Surviving to Thriving: Why Growth is Crucial for Micro Businesses

Growth is the lifeblood of any business, particularly for micro businesses.

For small-scale enterprises, expanding operations and scaling up can be the difference between long-term success and stagnation.

Growth is not just about increasing revenue; it’s about building a sustainable and resilient business that can weather economic downturns, attract investment, and ultimately provide a significant payout when it’s time to sell.

The many hats of being a business owner

One primary reason business owners struggle with growth is the multitude of hats they wear.

Solo entrepreneurs often juggle marketing, customer service, operations, and finance simultaneously, leaving little room for strategic planning or scaling.

Without a clear growth strategy, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and miss opportunities.

Setbacks

Another key reason why business owners struggle with growth is setbacks.

For example finding good people isn’t easy.

We covered this in a previous blog Business Growth & Building a Team.

The reality is that you are unlikely to find your ideal employee first time let alone even the fifth time.

As Winston Churchill famously said “Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm”.

Never has this been more true than when you are building your own team.

Looking back on Friend & Grant and the current team if I exclude my wife Jan, then the longest serving employee in the current team, Darren Hughes, joined me in 2000- eight years after I started and after I had employed and lost several other team members.

Persistence is key and what you also find is that whilst building the team is probably the most difficult thing you will do as a business owner (and will always give you the biggest headaches!) it does get easier to attract good people as the team grows.

Limiting Potential

Staying as a solo entrepreneur can severely limit income potential.

While handling everything alone may seem cost-effective initially, it restricts the business’s capacity to take on more clients or projects.

As a result, income plateaus.

Hiring employees or outsourcing tasks can free up the owner’s time to focus on high-value activities such as business development and innovation, which are essential for substantial growth.

Moreover, a business reliant solely on its owner can be a risky investment.

Potential buyers look for businesses with scalable operations and established teams.

A robust, growing business is more appealing and can command a higher selling price.

By embracing growth, micro business owners can adapt to market demands and enhance their business’s market value.

Summary

In conclusion, growth is essential for micro businesses to ensure sustainability, increase income potential, and maximise future payouts.

Overcoming the challenges of scaling up requires strategic planning and leveraging resources beyond the solo entrepreneur’s capabilities.

It also requires endurance and a willingness to accept setbacks as a stepping stone to future success.

Embracing growth is not just about survival; it’s about unlocking the business’s full potential and reaping the rewards of hard work and innovation.
